"GET A DECENT DATABASE, LIKE POSTGRES OR DB2"
Ignorance such as "Every thing that I do not know is bad", sometimes is blissful.
First learn to use all the three RDBMS and then talk.

Excellent. I recently installed SQL Server 2008 Express edition and ran into this same problem of getting the "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server..." message. I'm barely a novice, and wasted many hours fighting to find a solution to this problem. I'm very thankful your suggestion worked.

Excellent, thanks. Have seen many posts on other sites which didn't solve the problem because they missed out the ..\local settings\ folder in the path. :-)
